Valve’s Steam Controller Demonstration

Valve has posted a video demonstration of their Steam Controller prototype. I have to say that I am pretty impressed with the level of accuracy that is shown. It looks like something that could get pretty close to mouse level accuracy with practice.

Here’s a quick look at some games being played with the prototype version of the Steam Controller — the same version that we’ll be shipping to 300 Steam users later this year. We’ll post more demonstrations like this soon, including footage of some other game developers using the controller to play their own games.

Windows Home Server

I decided to consolidate my NAS and my Minecraft Server into one. I picked up a copy of Windows Home Server 2011 for $35 and installed it on what used to be my Linux Minecraft Server. I am actually fairly pleased with what $35 gets you. It has a pretty nice dashboard for setting up client backups of other PCs on the network, as well as setting up media streaming and remote web access. It is also running a (limited) version of Windows Server 2008 under the hood, so you can add roles such as Web Server (IIS), Windows Server Update Services, DHCP Server, & DNS Server. I now have the server monitoring all of my PCs, backing them up, sending me alerts, and streaming/transcoding media for my various devices. There is even a nice app for my Windows Phone that allows me to remotely access my media, and do some administrative tasks such as trigger manual backups of PCs on my network.

Oh yeah, it also still runs Minecraft.

Consoles Outdated At Launch

Cod-Ghosts

I keep reading news articles popping up that basically say that next-gen games are going to be inferior to the PC versions at launch. This is a bit disappointing, as usually when we get new consoles they keep pace with the PC for at least a year or two. However it looks like that is not the case this time, and they will seem outdated at day one. We already have Infinity Ward stating that the PC version of Ghosts will be better due to a separate set of higher quality assets for the PC. “PC is taking a different tack from previous games [in the series,]” executive producer Mark Rubin told Kotaku. Where older Infinity Ward CoDs shared assets between PC and console, this time around, things will be different. Now, PC has its own set of assets,” Rubin says. “It’s going to look better than any Call of Duty we’ve ever made on PC.” I have also read similar reports that Battlefield 4 does not look so great on the PS4.

Now we have Ubisoft announcing that will see their best games enhanced with PC-exclusive effects and features. So far they have confirmed that Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and Watch Dogs will get the special treatment on PC. These features include support for TXAA, HBAO+, SLI support, and higher resolution assets.

It looks like if you want a true next gen experience, you are better off skipping the consoles this time around and building a nice PC.
