Tribes: Ascend Announced

Some of you that follow PC gaming news might remember that a little while back the Tribes intellectual property was purchased from Garage Games by Hi-Rez Studios, the game company behind the quasi-MMO Global Agenda. Garage Games sold it to Hi-Rez not long after they themselves bought the property rights only to run into some financial difficulties.

At the time, Hi-Rez announced their plans to make a Tribes MMO titled Tribes: Universe. However, it looks like they also have a more modest Tribes game in the works as well. Tribes: Ascend is an Unreal Engine 3-based, multiplayer-only, downloadable Tribes game heading to XBLA and PC in 2011. Not much is known about it, but according to the press release the game “is being positioned as the multi-player successor to the much lauded Tribes 2 and a re-introduction of the franchise to the gaming world”. I know a lot of players would rather just have a remake of Tribes 1 with better graphics. Personally, I am just happy that the franchise isn’t dead, and that we are actually getting two new games.

I am a bit worried that are bringing it out on consoles as well, so I am keeping my expectations in check. Still, I have to say that I am really interested to hear more about what they are working on.
