Good Old Games

gog_logo.png

Good Old Games is a digital distribution service that sells older PC games that have been updated to work on modern operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7. I was part of their beta over a year ago, and thought that the site was a great idea, but at the time they were lacking content so I held off posting about them. However, a year later the site has grown its catalog to include just about every amazing game from the 90s that I remember playing, and they are constantly adding new games as well. I have already purchased a few games from them such as Fallout 2 and Freespace 2, and every time I visit my wish list keeps growing.

What I really love about the site is that all of their games are DRM free. After buying a game you can install it on any PC and re-download it whenever you want, as many times as you need, and you can play it without an internet connection. Also, a lot of the games come with extra content like soundtracks, manuals, and wallpapers.

Anyway I highly suggest checking the site out. Promotions are organized almost every week, so the weekend is always a good time to drop by. If you don’t feel like browsing their entire catalog, here are a few of my favorite games that they have available:

Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition
Duke Nukem, the politically incorrect celebrity and ultimate alien ass kicker, defends Earth and its babes from alien invasion.
He is a can-do hero who realizes that sometimes innocent people have to die in order to save Earth, so accuracy of gun fire is not a real concern to him. This is the award winning game that helped define the FPS genre and introduced unparalleled interactivity and a talking main character.

Take the fight to the aliens in Hollywood, Los Angeles, a moon base and alien spacecraft. Defeat the aliens, so Duke can get back to some R&R with a stogie, a warm belly and a bottle of Jack.

Atomic Edition is the most complete version of the game that includes fourth bonus episode, new weapon and enemies.

MDK 2
Kurt Hectic in his snazzy suit with ribbon chute is back to save the universe. This time he is teamed with the genius Dr. Hawkins and the 6-legged gun-toting robotic dog, Max. Together they must out-sneak, out-blast and out-think their enemies as they attempt to reclaim the Earth from a vile alien menace.

All three characters – Kurt, Doctor Hawkins and Max are playable, each has his own levels, powers and items and a completely different gameplay focus. Kurt is about stealth and sniping, the Doctor has a few direct attacks but also has the ability to create items and effects out of simple household objects, while Max is a cigar smoking, quad gun toting demolition squad of a dog.

earthworm_jim.jpg
Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
Jim wasn’t always a studly super-worm. He was once just a spineless, dirt-eater with no real mission in his life…

But then something unexpected happened. The evil Psy-Crow was transporting a super suit, built by the genius Professor Monkey-For-A-Head, to Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-Filled, Malformed, Slug-For-A-Butt, but along the way it was stolen by a rebel. Although Psy-Crow killed the rebel, the suit fell down to Earth, landing on an Earth Worm. That cosmic twist of fate placed Jim in control of an ultra-high-tech-indestructible-super-space-cyber-suit.

Anyway, Earthworm Jim found out that Princess What’s-Her-Name had been captured and set out to save her. Meanwhile, there’s a bounty on Jimmy and plenty of people are in line to take Queen Slug-For-A-Butt up on her offer.

Now Jim must make it to the princess and stay clear of Psy-Crow, the intergalactic bounty hunter, until the final battle with Queen Slug-For-A-Butt. To accomplish this, you’ll have to use every weapon and ability at your disposal to wriggle your way through dozens of original and just plain weird levels.
