I just got back from seeing Star Trek (trailer here), and I have to say that all the hype was well deserved. This is one of the best films I have seen in ages, and that is not just the Star Trek fan inside me talking. This movie is a fantastic sci-fi film that everyone should go see, even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of Star Trek. The plot, acting, and special effects were all great. It also seems that my fears of the film becoming too mainstream and losing its Star Trek vibe were unwarranted, as the film certainly has a very Star Trek attitude. There is absolutely no mistaking this movie for anything but a Trek film.
However, I do have some complaints, but this is something that only other serious Star Trek fans would have issues with. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but certain plot elements stand contrary to pretty much every other existing piece of Trek lore. Essentially, this movie says that something doesn’t exist anymore when it clearly does in every other Star Trek series. I will be interested in seeing if this film ends up being considered canon, and if so if it is relegated to something like an “alternate timeline” instead of part of the “core” Star Trek story (which is what I expect).
Anyway, bottom line: SEE THIS MOVIE.
