With Halloween fast approaching, many gaming sites are busy writing their Halloween features. Gametrailers just came out with their list of the top 10 scariest games of all time. While their list is far from perfect, I do agree with a few of their picks. I was happy to see that System Shock 2 made the list, though I would have given it first place. I am also happy to see that F.E.A.R. didn’t make the list. While the combat in that game was cool at times, it wasn’t scary in the slightest. Anyway, if you are looking for some scary games to play this Halloween, check out GT’s list and then head over here to check out last years list of scary game demos.

Honestly, I think that list sucked. Not only was System Shock 2 being lower than Doom 3, but it only had one RE title, and 1 Silent Hill title. Maybe it wouldn’t be right to put like 3 of the same titles on there, but if they deserve to be there, they should be.
I can’t even think of a game (except for other games in the titles they mentioned) that I’d put on the list…maybe just cause it’s late.
Ok ok ok here’s the run down:
I believe in no way possible should SS2 be #9.
It should at least have the number two slot although I know I’d get a lot of arguments on that- the people who made this video did a good job with their campaign for Silent Hill 1- even thinking about that game sometimes freaks the hell out of me, solely because it maintains the element that gave SS2 so much potency: Isolation. However, meager “draw distance coverup” fog aside- the scariest levels were in the dark, with creatures that made the ill-abused zombie cliche wet its pants. The hospital was long winded and almost never-ending, but always kept you creeped out no matter what corner you turned. And yeah, the low-end graphics were helpful in that regard, but the sound is still top knotch and still part of what made it so creepy.
As for Doom 3- fuck that. That’s the only two words I need to describe the “monster closet O RAMA” that was that POS. The multiplayer was freakier than the single player, and when you finally get to hell its actually really, really dull. Visually its more appealing, but you already have plenty of ammo for your Really Big Guns, so there’s no reason to be freaked out at all.
I haven’t played a few of the games on the list, but I’m surprised Clive Barker’s Undying didn’t make it up there. Fatal Frame does deserve a spot though, no doubt.
My final comment? What the fuck with the AVP on the jaguar? That’s bullshit. If you really have to put an AVP on there at least put AVP 1 for the PC on the list. It was dark, the aliens moved WICKED fast, and if you didn’t throw a tiny, insignificant flare, you were fucked because as a marine you couldn’t see shit half the time. No, not half the time- 99% of the time. Unlike Silent Hill though, that was integral to the game design, and all the more freaky. For my first PC game it really had me screaming my head off when I was a kid, and it would still manage to do so if I could get it to run on my pc nowadays.
The scariest game I’ve ever played though? Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3. Why the FUCK do people like this thing?! My friend at college is obsessed with it. That’s the most terrifying thing ever.
